An Alternative, Non-Apoptotic Form of Programmed Cell Death

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Traditional thought about cell death focuses on two distinct types of events. Apoptosis is characterized by distinct morphological characteristics and specific genetic events; necrosis is described by different morphological characteristics and a lack of genetic control of the death process. However some forms of cell death, including oncosis and some developmental and neurodegenerative cell deaths, do not fit morphological descriptions of necrosis or apoptosis. The biochemical mechanisms by which these alternative cell deaths occur are unknown. In this study, the authors describe a form of cell death that requires gene expression but does not conform to morphological and biochemical criteria for apoptosis.

Impact of Duration and Severity of Persistent Pain on Programmed Cell Death

Programmed cell death is a highly regulated form of cell death, mostly distinguished by the activation of a family of cystein-aspartate proteases (caspases) that cleave various proteins resulting in morphological and biochemical changes characteristic of this form of cell death. Several recent studies have addressed the role of programmed cell death in inflammatory and chronic pain states. Casp...

The Implications of Several Forms of Programmed Necrosis for Cancer Therapy

The dogma that apoptosis and autophagy are the sole forms of Programmed Cell Death (PCD) is no longer accepted, due to the recent discovery of programmed necrosis, a non-apoptotic, non-autophagic form of PCD. Necroptosis, parthanatos, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis are all forms of programmed necrosis, as these types of cell death dismantle the cell in an ordered fashion that is distinctly differe...

Die another way--non-apoptotic mechanisms of cell death.

Regulated, programmed cell death is crucial for all multicellular organisms. Cell death is essential in many processes, including tissue sculpting during embryogenesis, development of the immune system and destruction of damaged cells. The best-studied form of programmed cell death is apoptosis, a process that requires activation of caspase proteases. Recently it has been appreciated that vario...

An alternative form of paraptosis-like cell death, triggered by TAJ/TROY and enhanced by PDCD5 overexpression.

Accumulating reports demonstrate that apoptosis does not explain all the forms of programmed cell death (PCD), particularly in individual development and neurodegenerative disease. Recently, a novel type of PCD, designated 'paraptosis', was described. Here, we show that overexpression of TAJ/TROY, a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, induces non-apoptotic cell death with ...
